There are a variety of ways that women and men can wear their hair—up, down, curly, straight, and everything in between. But, did you know that some hairstyles can actually lead hair loss? Wearing your hair pulled back too tightly in an updo, braid, or ponytail can actually cause what is known as Traction alopecia.

At Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group, our board certified dermatologists are here to address our patients’ hair loss concerns and provide the best treatment possible to bring back their full and thick head of hair. What Is Traction Alopecia?

Traction alopecia is a hair loss condition that people experience as a result of damage or trauma to their hair follicles, which often occurs from pulling the hair too tightly. This can easily happen to girls who wear tight ponytails or other hairstyles. Over time, the trauma done to the hair follicles makes it extremely hard to grow healthy hair, meaning that hair will eventually break and become weak.

Because traction alopecia occurs primarily from the pulling of one's hair over a period of time, brushing the hair too hard can also cause hair loss in certain people. Other causes of traction alopecia can include tightly worn hats or safety helmets. Due to the constant tugging and tight fit that come with helmets and hats, this also leads to damaged hair follicles.

Traction Alopecia is also commonly seen in African American women, occurring as a result of tight hairstyles including dreadlocks and braids. For traction alopecia of this kind, it’s most common for women to experience hair loss around the temples and on the sides of their heads. To avoid experiencing traction alopecia, it’s important to remember the following:

Let your hair rest
Avoid harsh products
Keep helmet, hats, and headgear to a minimum
Avoid tight hair do’s

Can Your iPhone Give You Wrinkles?

Twenty years ago, women had enough stress in their lives that lead to wrinkles and pre-mature aging of the face. With the increased prevalence of the cell phone in today’s society, it’s time to add yet another platform for wrinkles—ladies and gentlemen, introducing the “smart phone squint.” The amount of time American’s spend on cell phones is increasing, resulting in facial strain that can contribute to unwanted wrinkles and crow’s feet around your eyes.

At Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group, our board certified dermatologists want you to understand all the facts, and are here to provide you with the best ways to avoid and treat facial wrinkles.
Tips To Avoid An Aging Face

Starring at a small screen for several hours each day certainly adds up, and it isn’t just middle-aged people that should be worried about wrinkles—young adults spend even more time on their phones, using it for additional purposes including internet browsing, shopping, and the ever so popular texting. If you’ve found yourself spending more time than usual peering at your smart phone’s screen, it may be time to take a break, or follow some of our tips below:

Brightness Control

A phone screen that is too bright actually causes our eyes to narrow, easily paving the way for crow’s feet to grace our faces. A simple trick for combating this problem is to turn down the brightness on your phone. This won’t only help save your face, but also lengthen your phone's battery life.

Let It Ring

We’ve grown far too attached to our cell phones as of late. It’s important to remember to take a break from our phones every so often throughout the day in order to let our eyes re-adjust and rest. This helps reduce eye strain, which in turn reduces your likeliness of unwanted wrinkles around your eyes and brow.

Increase Text Size

Sometimes, we squint while reading information from our phones because the text is far too small. Instead of squinting, it’s a great idea to enlarge the text on your phone, which can be easily accomplished through a quick browse of your settings and options.

Treatment Options

For those already experiencing wrinkles, frown lines, and crow's feet around their eyes or brows, one of the best and easiest forms of treatment to combat the aging process is Botox. Botox is injected with virtually no pain and there is no down time, and it can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles on your face instantly. Visiting a board certified dermatologist in Los Angeles will help you better understand if you’re a good candidate for Botox.

Contact Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group Today

If you’ve fallen victim to the smart phone squint and would like to enlist the services of a board certified dermatologist in Los Angeles that can help rejuvenate your face with the help of fillers or Botox, please call Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group today at (310) 855-1160 to schedule your initial consultation.
Easy Treatments For Smoothing Wrinkles

Though some may see their wrinkles as a sign of an “exciting” life, we’re willing to bet the majority of you could probably do without them. Often occurring as a sign of aging, fine lines and wrinkles affect everyone at some point. Luckily, wrinkles can be easily treated with several different options. The doctors of Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group can help you better decide which options may be best for you during an initial consultation.

How Can I Smooth My Wrinkles?

With today’s technology and modern medicine, there are several different ways that a person can treat their unwanted wrinkles. Though there isn’t a “cure all” available yet, there are plenty of options that can help you appear younger and achieve that healthy glow you’ve been longing.

Retinoids & Creams

Retinoids and wrinkle creams that are made with vitamin A have been proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also possible for specific creams to help with uneven pigmentation and flaky or dry skin. If you think you might be a good candidate for medicated retinoids and creams, it’s important to speak with your dermatologist to decide which will be best for you. The use of some creams can cause excessive sun burns—it's important to always remember your sun screen when venturing out for the day!

Lasers

Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group offer several different laser treatments that can help people of all ages seek smoother and less damaged skin. The best part about laser treatments is that there is virtually no down time after receiving your treatment. Depending on the person, one or several treatments may be needed to see results. During your initial consultation with Dr. Dubow, the laser best for you will be decided upon. Among the most popular for the treatment of aging skin are fractional resurfacing and the V-Beam laser.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are great for everyone—whether you’re in a hurry or have some time to kill, a chemical peel can be completed in as little as thirty minutes! Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group offers several different peel acidity strengths with patients able to see results in as little as five days.

The Beta Peel is ideal for patients who wish to exfoliate their skin in hopes of achieving a softer and smoother outcome. If you’re aiming to diminish fine lines, a stronger TCA Peel may be what you’re looking for. Because this type of peel is stronger, the entire peeling process can take upwards of seven days, but leaves the patient with dramatic results in the minimal appearance of fine lines, pigmentation problems, and acne scars.

Botox

Always a popular go-to procedure, Botox works by "freezing" the muscles in your face that give you the ability to frown, there by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is great for patients who want to reduce crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead creases. Botox injections do not require any down time, and patients are able to continue about their day immediately after leaving the office.

If you’d like to learn more about erasing your fine lines and wrinkles through the various procedures offered by Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group, call (310) 855-1160 today to schedule your initial consultation.
Make Bare Legs Better With Age

It’s no secret that as we age, certain parts of our bodies don’t always look the same as they did years ago. Not only do we have wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and sagging skin to deal with, but also the appearance of unwanted spider veins on our legs. However, Dr. Goldman and Dr. Dubow want you to know that there is hope with sclerotherapy treatment. This type of vein therapy can erase your unsightly spider veins quickly and easily, leaving you with the beautiful, bare legs that were once lost to age. What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of varicose veins. This procedure works by injecting a special sclerosing agent, Asclera, directly into the veins, making them to shrink and dissolve in only a few short weeks. Today, sclerotherapy is the most effective and common procedure to treat spider veins in Los Angeles. This treatment requires little to no down time following the injection, and most patients feel up to returning to their normal day to day activities as soon as they leave the office.

Side effects following your spider vein treatment are usually extremely minimal, and in some cases patients experience no side effects at all. Most commonly, itching at the injection site or raised, red areas can be seen following treatment. This usually clears up on its own after only a few days. Dr. Goldman and Dr. Dubow can further explain the recovery process with you during an initial consultation or following your treatment.

What Causes Leg Veins?

Leg veins are often times the result of backed up blood caused by weak or damaged veins. In your body, veins are responsible for carrying blood to the heart. In the case of varicose veins, the valves inside become weak, allowing blood to leak and collect where they appear on your body. When the valves continue to leak, this ultimately leads to a bigger and more visible vein.

Who Is A Good Candidate?

Generally, the treatment of spider veins is ideal for men or woman who want to regain their legs' youthful appearance. If you’ve ever felt self conscious about the appearance of your legs due to spider veins, you may be a great candidate to undergo sclerotherapy or vein therapy.

Sclerotherapy is performed in the office and is considered a non-invasive procedure. The number of treatments that will allow you to see your desired results varies from patient to patient, with some only requiring one office visit and others requiring three to five. If you need to undergo multiple sclerotherapy treatments, it’s best to schedule your appointments four to six weeks apart.

A Great Treatment For Fall—Sclerotherapy!

With fall and winter quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to consult with a board certified dermatologist about correcting and diminishing the visibility of your leg veins. While sclerotherapy can be performed year round, the results can sometimes take a few months for full effects to take place, meaning by the time spring rolls around, you’ll be ready to show off your new and improved legs for all to see and envy. What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins develop as a result of weak or damaged valves in your veins. Your heart pumps blood throughout your entire body, and veins are responsible for carrying this blood back to the heart. However, as we age, sometimes these valves become weak and allow our blood to begin flowing backwards. When this happens, the backwards flowing blood begins to leak and collect in other areas, resulting in the formation of spider veins.

Spider veins are extremely common, eventually resulting in more than 50% of women over the age of 50 and 45% of men over the age of 50. There are several factors that may be to blame for your development of spider veins, including:

-Age
-Medical History
-Sun Exposure
-Pregnancy
-Obesity

If you’re wondering what can be done to treat your spider veins, Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group is here to help.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure growing in popularity that offers relief to those experiencing unwanted leg veins. This type of procedure involves our dermatologists, Dr. Dubow and Dr. Goldman, injecting a medicine into your unsightly vessels, causing them to shrink and eventually disappear. This procedure is entirely safe and doesn’t have any serious side effects.

After receiving injections, your body will eventually absorb the veins treated in a natural way. This not only rids you of spider veins, but also prevents them from ever occurring in that spot again. If you’ve ever wondered whether or not you’d be a good candidate for leg vein sclerotherapy treatment, our Los Angeles Dermatologists can speak with you about how we can help you get your healthy, younger legs back just in time for this coming spring.

Recovery Time

Because every patient is treated with different amounts of medicine depending on his/her unique situation, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact time frame for recovery of each individual. Generally speaking, it’s possible to see results almost immediately, while others may require additional treatments over a span of several months, which is why the fall months are a great time to undergo treatment to reduce the visibility of your spider and varicose veins.

If you’ve been wondering what you can do to get rid of your unsightly spider or varicose veins, we want to hear from you.
Facts On Fillers & Injectables

Considered to be some of the most popular cosmetic procedures today, the use of facial fillers has grown exponentially in recent years. Often used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and add volume to the face, dermal fillers have names that you’ve probably heard often, including Juvederm and Restylane. At Goldman Dubow Dermatology, our board certified dermatologists want our patients to understand the full effects of facial fillers and injectable treatments and how they can benefit you.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic Acid fillers are a great non-invasive option for many patients who are seeking facial rejuvenation treatments. These fillers are used to restore lost facial volume, as well as enhance the size and shape of the lips.

Hyaluronic Acid fillers come with a huge benefit that others do not—they’re resorbable. If an injectable or filler treatment is resorbable, this means that your dermatologist can correct a botched treatment by injecting a solution to dissolve your filler, allowing you to feel more comfortable in knowing that you won’t have to walk around with unsatisfactory results.

Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group offers both Juvederm and Restylane for patients who are interested in using hyaluronic acid fillers to restore volume to their face. Another benefit of both Juvederm and Restylane is that the two are actually a derivative of substances found in your body, leaving little room for sensitivity issues to arise during treatment.

Side Effects & Recovery Time

Though side effects are rare, it is possible to experience certain problems following injections of your facial fillers. To avoid this, it’s best that you follow the post care regimen as provided by your dermatologist and make sure that you’re being injected by a board certified physician.

If all goes well with your injections, you shouldn’t feel the need for any down time and are able to return to your daily activities shortly after leaving the doctors office. Of course, rest is always necessary to assure that your body recovers from any type of cosmetic surgery, no matter how big or small.

Who Should Treat You?

When you’re considering undergoing any type of injectable or filler treatment, it’s extremely important to understand the type of training that your dermatologist has and whether or not it’s compatible with the type of procedure you’re thinking about. It’s always best to enlist the services of a board certified dermatologist to perform injections like Botox, Restylane, and Juvederm, among others. When a person is injected by someone who isn’t adequately trained in his or her field, the risk of error is greater. Though injections come with minor risks, the following are more likely to be experienced when not treated by a board certified dermatologist in Los Angeles:

-Severe Bruising
-Asymmetry
-Over-Injection
-Skin Necrosis
-Swelling

Before scheduling your injectable treatment, make sure the practice is a reputable one, like Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group.

Help Your Child Prevent Skin Cancer

Though summer is coming to an end, it’s important to remember that the sun’s rays and UV exposure can be just as strong all year, especially in southern California. With more than two million American’s diagnosed with skin cancer every year, the doctors of Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group urge parents to remember to take extreme preventive measures to protect their own skin and the skin of their children.

What Can Parents Do?

Aside from applying generous amounts of sunscreen as directed, it’s important to also remember to take into account the time of sunscreen applications, if your child has had contact with water or been sweating, and which SPF level you choose to buy.Parents can also help reduce their children’s risk of skin cancer by making sure their children wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater and covering up with hats, shirts, and sunglasses when in direct contact with the sun's rays. It’s also a great idea to stay out of the sun between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM, as this is when the sun's ultra violet rays are at their stronges.

If your children are older, showing them images of the negative effects that skin cancer can have on one's body is also a great idea to get the seriousness of the message across to them. Goldman Dubow Dermatology group offers excellent images in their skin cancer photo gallery. Discussing the negative effects of indoor tanning is also a great way to get your children to listen to you about the risk of developing skin cancer.

Who Is At Risk?

Preventing sunburns from happening to your child or children at a young age is very important, as the more sun exposure an infant or child has tends to increase their likelihood of developing skin cancer in their later life years. You’ll want to take extra precautions to limit sun exposure from your children if:

Their skin does not tan easily
They have very fair skin
They have blonde or red hair

To learn more about what you can do to lower your child’s risk of over sun exposure, contact a dermatologist in Los Angeles today.

Skin Cancer Facts

In today’s society, it is widely known that too much sun exposure and UV rays can directly result in the development of skin cancer at any point in a person's life. Though certain types of skin cancer can be treated with a high success rate if caught early, it’s best to take all preventative measures when possible. The dermatologists of Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group suggest that everyone wear sunscreen when outside and limit their direct sun exposure as much as possible.

School policies on Sunscreen

Currently, there are 49 states that ban sunscreen in schools and youth camps. California is the only state allowing kids to bring sunscreen without a doctor’s note. Jesse Michener, a mother in Tacoma, took on a school district after her daughters came home from a school trip with severe sunburns.

The policy’s said reason is to protect against the additives found in sunscreens that could potentially trigger allergic reactions. How much more likely is a group of children to have allergic reactions to a sunscreen than to have severe burns from the sun? Sunscreen allergies are no more common than allergies to soap. We stand by Jesse’s cry to end the ban on sunscreen in schools. Children of all ages should have access to sunscreen in any area where daylight exists.

The FDA is taking steps to help protect consumers from sun damages to the skin. We are constantly reminded how imperative it is to guard your skin with sunscreen to prevent premature aging and skin cancer. We are constantly exposed to the messages about the effectiveness of sunscreen products and how they are necessary for healthy skin. In our practice, and even on this site, we remind you to shield yourself. Yet our children are not being protected for a full day at school.

Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2-3 hours, and even more frequently if you are engaged in physical activity. Parents who apply sunscreen to their children before class, will find that by the time lunchtime recess comes around the child is completely unprotected from the sun’s harmful rays. Children should reapply during recess and after-school activities.

Policies are now being fought against. If you disagree with school’s sunscreen policies around the country, please leave your thoughts here and be sure to visit sunsafteyforkids.org to learn how to find or create a committee near you so we can change these policies once and for all!

A recent study from a Japanese scientist has shed new light on hair restoration treatments for women suffering from female pattern baldness. The research consisted of implanting hair follicles created from stem cells into hairless mice, which returned remarkable results as the mice showed signs of normal hair growth cycles. This finding demonstrates the potential for hair regeneration therapy but it would likely take close to 10 years to determine if this study will be successful in humans. This creates new hope for men and women who are experiencing hair loss or thinning. Althought this treatment is at least 10 years away, right now you can get hair loss help from Dr. Peter Goldman.

Slowing Down The Signs Of Aging

With age comes knowledge - and wrinkles, and fine lines, and crow’s feet. We’re growing older and wiser, so let’s be wise about slowing down the signs of aging by being privy to a few simple tricks. Dr. Goldman and Dr. Dubow suggest the following:Prevention For Success: Think of caring for your skin as you would your savings account. You don’t expect your savings account to have $1 million in it over night. You need to save. Much like your savings account, you need to save your skin too. Start protecting your skin at an earlier age, as opposed to starting when you’re older. This will keep your skin looking youthful later on in life and postpone the need for anti-aging treatments!

Wear Sunscreen: Wearing sunscreen daily, in combination with a daily moisturizer, will help keep your skin safe from sun damage. The new FDA Sunscreen guidelines suggest wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15 to protect against both UVA and UVB radiation on a daily basis. Apply your sunscreen before your moisturizer for maximum protection.

Stop Wrinkles From Forming: Repeated scowling or squinting leads to horizontal lines on your forehead and/or crow’s feet around the eyes. If you are able to stop the muscle movement early with preventative Botox injections, you will have a greater chance of keeping the wrinkles away for greater period of time. If you already have wrinkles Botox injections will also help minimize their appearance.

Choosing A Good Sunscreen

Choosing a sunscreen isn’t as simple as it used to be, and with summer quickly approaching it is important you know how to find a good one.

Dr. Dubow specializes in skin cancer treatments and wants you to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun and reduce your risk for skin cancer.

Over the years he has discovered that most patients select a sunscreen based only on the sun protection factor (SPF), but there is more to it than that.
The SPF number is a rating of how well the sunscreen protects skin against one type of cancer-causing UV ray, ultraviolet B (UVB). But you also need to protect your skin from ultraviolet A rays (UVA), which cause sun damage and wrinkles, and also increase your risk of skin cancer.

A BROAD-SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN that protects you from both UVA and UVB is the best option. Here is what to take into consideration when selecting a sunscreen:

UVB PROTECTION: Look for a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. (People with very fair skin or a family history of skin cancer should select an SPF 30 or higher.)

UVA PROTECTION: There is no rating to tell you how good a sunscreen is at blocking UVA rays, so you need to look at the ingredients. A good sunscreen will contain at least 1 of the following UVA blocking ingredients: ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone or zinc oxide.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen will lower your risk for skin cancer and prevent sun damage.

Our favorite sunscreen is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defence, SPF 50. It has a slight tint so it gives your skin a nice glow, and feels like a lightweight moisturizer. It is our top seller for both men and women.

Turn Your Frown Upside Down

“Frown lines” are often the biggest cause for concern among patients at Goldman Dubow Dermatology Group.

Scrunched eyebrows, pronounced nasolabial folds and thinning lips can make you look unhappy or angry, even when you are actually happy.

Dr. Goldman and Dr. Dubow are both expert injectors and can get rid of your deceiving frown instantly with fillers and Botox!
Vertical lines develop between your eyebrows after years of squinting or frowning. Botox injections will erase these lines and leave your skin looking smooth.

Nasolabial folds run from your nose to your mouth and can accentuate a frown. These lines begin to appear as your skin loses collagen. Juvederm or Restylane injections will revolumize this area so you look years younger.

Lips lose their natural volume and become thinner as you age. With a Restylane or Juvederm lip enhancement treatment you can have smooth, full lips again.

These quick fixes will erase your frown and give you another reason to keep smiling!

If you are interested in these fast frown fixes, please call to schedule a consultation with Dr. Goldman or Dr. Dubow!
